CHILDHOOD

 Audie Murphy was born in Hunt County, Texas. His father deserted his family, so he had to take action and take care of all 11 of his brothers and sisters. He even had to drop out of school in 5th grade so he could get a job picking cotton for a single dollar a day to help support his family further.

TEENAGE YEARS

His mother eventually passed away when he was 16 years old, leaving him orphaned. He was refused enlistment in the marines and also the paratroopers for being severely underweight and short, being 5 5 and 110 lbs.

MILITARY SERVICE

Audie Murphy first enlisted in the US army in 1942, after falsifying his birth certificate so he could serve at 17 years old. He served for a total of 19 years, from 1942-1945 in the US army, 1950-1966 in the National Guard.

SINGLE-HANDEDLY STOPPED A GERMAN ATTACK

On January 26, 1945, Murphy was commanding company B of the 15th infantry, when out of nowhere, German soldiers charged the group, and Murphy directed his men to fall back into the nearby woods. He then placed himself onto a tank, and took out over 20 German soldiers by himself, and basically stopped the attack completely.
